Vermilion

« A REBIRTH AFTER CHAOS. FROM INANIMATE MATTER TO LIVING BEINGS »

The complementary dynamic between Chaos and Cosmos lies at the core of Vermilion: the initial emergence of order from which nature and life arise. According to Hesiod’s Cosmogony, Chaos represents the primordial state of void and darkness preceding the creation of the Cosmos.
The animal, plant and mineral worlds form a vast landscape of references, from mating rituals and migrations to the origins of the world and great cataclysms. Everything is interconnected: myth and reality, chaos and cosmos, the finite and the infinite.
The myth of Deucalion and Pyrrha from Ovid’s Metamorphoses provides a central image of rebirth. After the great flood, the two protagonists throw stones — “the bones of the great mother” — behind their shoulders, from which humankind takes form and comes to life. The choreography becomes a representation of this metamorphosis: from a mineral and inanimate state to life, from stone to flesh.
